At 2,150 metres in West Sikkim, Pelling is the town travellers come to for one uninterrupted thing — the wall of Kangchenjunga rising straight off the horizon, close enough on a clear morning to feel within reach. It is the quieter, more historic side of the state, where Sikkim's oldest monasteries and the ruins of its former capital sit along the same ridge.

Around the mountain views is a compact circuit worth a slow two days: the glass Skywalk beneath a 137-foot Chenrezig statue, the 17th-century Pemayangtse Monastery, the Rabdentse ruins in the forest, and waterfalls and the sacred Khecheopalri Lake within easy reach. It is heritage and Himalaya in one unhurried stay.

Best Time to Visit

March–May and October–December, for clear skies and the best odds of the Kangchenjunga view. Avoid the June–September monsoon, when cloud and rain often hide the peaks.

How to Reach

Nearest airport: Bagdogra (IXB), about 140 km. Nearest railhead: New Jalpaiguri (NJP), about 150 km. Reached by road via Jorethang or Gangtok — around 4–5 hours.

Getting Around

Local taxis cover the Pelling sightseeing circuit — the heritage loop of Skywalk, Pemayangtse and Rabdentse, and the longer run to the lake and waterfalls. Much of upper Pelling is walkable.

Permits

No permit needed for Pelling — it is open to all Indian and foreign travellers with a valid ID. A permit is only required for certain restricted areas further west.
