About Lachung

The alpine village, gateway to Yumthang & Zero Point.

Set at 2,700 metres where the Lachung Chu carves through North Sikkim, Lachung is a mountain village of apple orchards, timber houses and prayer-flag ridgelines — the last real settlement before the road climbs into the high Himalaya. It is the classic overnight base for the Yumthang and Zero Point run, close enough to the Tibetan frontier that the air changes as you arrive.

Beyond its two headline valleys, Lachung keeps its own quieter pleasures — a two-hundred-year-old monastery above the village, waterfalls tumbling straight off the cliffs, and hot springs steaming beside the river. It is a place to slow down for a night, watch the light move across the peaks, and let the altitude settle before the drive higher.

Best Time to Visit

March–June for the rhododendron bloom in Yumthang, and October–December for clear snow-lit skies. Roads can close during the July–September monsoon and in deep winter.

How to Reach

Nearest airport: Pakyong (PYG), about 140 km. Nearest railhead: New Jalpaiguri (NJP), about 230 km. Reached only by road via Gangtok and Mangan — around 6 hours.

Getting Around

Local shared jeeps run the Yumthang and Zero Point circuit. A registered local vehicle is mandatory for the higher stretches beyond Yumthang.

Permits

Lachung falls in a Protected Area — an Inner Line Permit (Protected Area Permit for foreign nationals) is required, arranged through a registered operator rather than individually.
