About Gangtok

The ridgeline capital, gateway to North Sikkim.

Perched at 1,650 metres, Gangtok is Sikkim's capital and the natural base for any Himalayan itinerary — a town of prayer flags, mist and mountain light, built along a ridge with the Kangchenjunga range on the horizon on a clear day.

At its heart is MG Marg, a car-free promenade of cafés, shops and evening strolls. Beyond it, Gangtok is also the launch point for North Sikkim's high-altitude circuit — Tsomgo Lake, Nathu La Pass and the road on to Lachen and Lachung.

Best Time to Visit

March–June and October–December, for clear skies and mountain views. Avoid the July–September monsoon.

How to Reach

Nearest airport: Pakyong (PYG), about 30 km. Nearest railhead: New Jalpaiguri (NJP), about 125 km.

Getting Around

Shared taxis and cabs cover the town easily. MG Marg itself is a car-free, pedestrian-only promenade.

Permits

Gangtok itself needs no permit. An Inner Line Permit is required for Tsomgo Lake, Nathula and North Sikkim, easily arranged locally.
