About Darjeeling

The Queen of the Hills, tea and mountain light.

At 2,042 metres in the West Bengal Himalaya, Darjeeling is the hill station that gave its name to the world's most famous tea. A British-era retreat of colonial architecture, ridge-top promenades and steep lanes falling away into cloud, it wakes early for one thing above all — the sunrise over Kanchenjunga, catching fire from Tiger Hill.

Between the viewpoints there is the slow rhythm of the town itself: the heritage toy train winding up from the plains, tea gardens rolling down the slopes, and Chowrasta at the heart of it all. Old monasteries, a Peace Pagoda and Mall Road strolls round out a place that rewards an unhurried stay.

Darjeeling Travel Guide

The practical detail — when to come, how to get here, and what to carry.

Best Time to Visit

Mid-March to May and October to early December, for clear air and the strongest odds of the Kanchenjunga view. The mid-June to mid-September monsoon brings cloud and landslide risk.

How to Reach

Nearest airport: Bagdogra (IXB), about 70 km. Nearest railhead: New Jalpaiguri (NJP), about 65 km — with the option of the heritage toy train up the hill from there.

Getting Around

Local taxis cover the town and the Seven-Point sightseeing circuit. Tiger Hill runs start around 4 AM, so book a vehicle the previous evening. Mall Road and Chowrasta are walkable.

Permits

No permit needed — Darjeeling is open to all Indian and foreign travellers. Only a valid ID is required at hotels.

Altitude & Climate

2,042 m — mild summers (12–20°C) and cold winters (2–10°C), with occasional snow. Tiger Hill mornings are bitter year-round, so carry a warm layer.

Currency & Language

Indian Rupee (₹). Nepali, Bengali, Hindi and English are all widely spoken.
